We must first agree on the ultimate idea of teaching, which is the effective flow of knowledge or technique from a teacher into a student. On this common ground, we teachers should really think how to make this flow effective, as well as rewarding to our students. Actually, this is not happening between most couples of teachers and students. The fact that little valuable things from the teachers are commanded by the students, especially in NOVIP classes, lies in the lack of experience of the teachers.
Different from the traditionally big lessons, VIP classes demand more of the students, while at the same time, much more of the teachers. University teachers are supposed to demand highly of the students and offer academic help, while VIP teachers have one more duty-to make it effective and efficient. The lack of either effectiveness or efficiency lies in disregard of the original form of VIP lessons-seminars-the most popular way of teaching in the western world.
A successful seminar requires the devotion from both two parties: teacher-usually a ground-setter and guider of the discussion-and student-a researcher, analyst, presenter, debater and reflector of the ground set by the teacher. Of course the number of teachers and students may vary according to the need of the lesson, but the ultimate essences of these two parties share some similarities.
So in a real successful VIP class, both teacher and student should play these two roles well. However, due to the nature of different VIP lessons, either party might be crumpled down into meaningless or boring routines. To avoid this from happening, here are some extra tips offered to NCE teachers:
1.Be close to students from day one. Teachers must gain full trust of students who may have failed continuously in lecture-teaching and help reestablish their self-confidence through walking down the podium and becoming their friends.
2.Understand the need of each particular student. I have witnessed VIP classes where teachers kept talking for an hour before asking the students opinion, and realized in the end that nothing valuable was absorbed. VIP classes are totally different from some teachers expertise, and they must learn to embrace the original form of VIP classes-seminars.
3.Figure out the old learning habit of them. It is almost impossible to alter one s personality. Similarly, it is highly improbable that any VIP teachers could change the learning format of their students. The only reasonable means of real effective teaching is through following up their old learning habit and adding up our own style to it step by step.
4.Break down the target into achievable schedule. After motivating, understanding and following students, teachers must work out a practical plan especially tailored to each particular student. Some experienced teachers prefer to do it from class one. My suggestion is to take it easy. Students nowadays are much more complicated than most teachers and they hate such clich s. Take a little more while to get to know them before throwing a schedule help in aiming reasonable.
5.Enforce the schedule set through constant reflection. Jobs are far from done even till the beginning of this stage. Keep in mind that the only thing that never changes is change it self. Students situation changes gradually, sometimes towards the better sometimes to the worse. Either way, teachers must adapt their old schedule into a newly refreshed one through revolving again the four procedures. Once the teacher stops updating this critical circle, the students stop learning faster.
All these tips are based on the idea that a teacher really wants to help the students to develop as fast as they could be. Also this concerns those who really want to take the responsibility to teach and enjoy the true happiness from those helped students.
